Starting from the carpark run past the toilet and take the path to the left of the small lake. This path winds around the outside of the horse area and heads through a gate into a short stretch of bush, then back through another gate and out near the horse area again, keep following the path around until eventually you go though a gate (or over the MTB ramp) and the trail stops.

Look ahead and slightly to the right and there is a pole with a white box next to it on the ridge, head for that, once there you will see a black water tank and just to the left of that is a gate, head down and through that. Again turn left and follow the farm track for about 500m and then take the left track again (rule of thumb turn left) follow this until you see the pipe bridge ahead, run up and onto the pipe bridge and to the end, check out the mangrove river and then head back off the bridge and turn left.

Follow the track around until you see a gate with "Planting Site" on it, turn left through this gate and follow the track for 100m and veer left. After a short while this track peters out, make your own way around the fenceline until you reach a small bridge and another gate/MTB ramp. Go through and turn right following an indistinct farm track until you reach a causeway over that same stream and follow the farm tracks back to the gate.

Turn left again and follow the farm track all the way to where it splits with a walking track going left. Take that track, along here you get some of the best harbour views. That track will take you to a viewpoint and then you head back inland past the tower which unfortunately you can't get up. Take a left at the intersection past the tower and follow the road all the way back to the carpark.

The Puhinui Craters, also coastal views and mangroves.

Quite a bit of parking there.

Moderate.

The whole area is open. If you have the map on your phone or printed it is really easy to find your way and if you get off track you just look around.

Generally good.

Waterproof leggings, Seam-sealed waterproof jacket, Beanie/thermal headwear, Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Cellphone, Map

Nothing drinkable on the run.

Some of the non-track sections could get very boggy in the middle of winter in which cas stick to the farm roads and formed walkways.

Trail Reviews

Nice when dry - really enjoyed it. Decent scenery for city trail! Plenty of sheep and cattle to keep you company. Definitely use gpx though!

Enjoyed the views of the harbour and the replanting conservation efforts. However due to the wet summer/winter, there was very little that was runable due to mud, water and swampy conditions. Even the gravel farm roads were muddy and under water at points. Plenty of sheep poo. Was still a nice way to fill in an hour while the kids were at Flight Path Motocross

More gravel farm tracks than had expected, but the current alternative is very soggy paddock. It's definitely better to run this when dry - unless you like picking your way through mud and puddles filled with sheep poo, and who knows what else. Superb location to view multiple bright full rainbows though, even a full double!
