Description

What a gem... from the carpark you head over a small footbridge and hit a pretty reasonable trail, quite well formed with steps. However at about 700m in the trail splits, take the trail to the left and up the hill and get ready for gnarly plus. Tree roots, windfall, mud, super steep climbs and repeat! Not much running going on but so much fun... we are called Wild Things after all!

It took an hour for the 3km to the top of the hill... there are plenty of places where you will need to take a minute to work out the trail. There is windfall that you will have to climb over, around and through and a few climbs where you will be holding onto trees and branches to help you climb. Just short of the high point you will come out onto Ridge Road, head to the left about 20m to the start of the kerbing and you will see the start of the trail down.... except that it goes up first.

This section is a lot more runnable. Eventually you will get back to the trail you started on... you can head right here back to the carpark or, to earn your Wild Explorer Points, past the previous route up the hill to the stream. Carefully climb down to the left (you will see where others have) and over the small stream and up the other side. Follow the semi-trail to a lovely small waterfall. Then re-trace your steps to the start of the trail and you are done.

I did it!
  • Access

There is a small carpark right where Brookdale Road becomes Pareremoremo Road... that is the start point.

There is a small unofficial carpark by the road with room for 3 to 4 cars. I would not expect it to be secure and it would not be a good move to leave valuables in your vehicle.

  • Staying Safe

    Moderate.

Take the time to work out where you are going, the trail is mostly clear although overgrown in places and sometimes the windfall takes a bit of getting around/over. There are orange triangles reasonably often to keep you on the right route.

    Very patchy.

Long-sleeved thermal top, Seam-sealed waterproof jacket, Windproof jacket, Beanie/thermal headwear, Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Survival blanket, Cellphone, Map.

There are frequent streams, not sure about the quality... but in an emergency...

The trail was boggy in places and a bit slippery on some of the steep sections... I would imagine in the wet of winter it would get very very tricky.

All the previously mentioned... tree roots, mud, steep climbs, windfall... this is a run laden with hazards... that's what makes it so much fun!
