This trail needs to be tackled a couple of hours either side of low tide, but you will still get wet feet.

Head down to the beach and head along the rocks to the right. A quick loop around Pudding Island allows for some rock pool exploring.

Once back from the island continue around the rocks, but beware of falling rocks. Cross the estuary and along Te Muri Beach to the campground at the far end.

From here follow the Purple marked trail up to overlook Wenderholm, and then down to run alongside the Puhoi River for a bit. Leaving the river it's time to climb again.

Once back at the road, turn left and up the road. Keep following the trail and out onto the ridge line and back down to the beach. Cross back over the estuary and turn right onto Cudlip Trail for some more climbing.

At the top turn right and head out to the lookout and a tiny bit of single trail. Photos done, run back to the top and straight ahead to head for home. Taking the left fork towards the upper car park will give 10km, the direct route to the right a frustrating 9.8km and car park shuttles.

Finish off with a well earned swim.

There a bird nesting sites on Te Muri Beach, along with a historic cemetery. There are some great views to be had.

No public transport. There is plenty of parking by the information hut and toilets by the beach. There is a short section of unsealed road in.

Moderate.

On the farmland the marker posts can be a bit hard to spot at times. The purple marked trail is new, so isn't yet on the park maps (Jan 2021).

Generally good.

Short-sleeved thermal top, Windproof jacket, Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Cellphone, Map

There is water at the Te Muri campground.

You cross working farmland, so beware during lambing and breeding seasons.
Most of the trail is exposed, so is quite hot in summer.

Trail Reviews

Adventure time!
Wet feet guaranteed, we did it on an early spring fine day at the lowest of tides and you will still get a bit wet unless you are a ballerina on your way too and from Pudding island. Around the rocks was good ankle training.
The purple track around Te Muri was a sopping wet grass track which just changed the moisture in our shoes to a slightly thicker consistency.
Views galore on the way down the Te Muri ridge line.
Would recommend doing this in summer for a faster time but all and all it was a nice day out.
