Starts down a well graded easy single track turn left onto the Dam access (gravel) road and follow this down the lakeside (looking to your right just after the first bridge for the waterfall) for 2 kms or so till you reach the Dam. Cross the Dam and you'll see steps and a track leading to the Christies/Summit tracks junctions. You can choose either direction, this course goes right on Christies Track. Technical bush track well defined but rough underfoot its a gem and gets mud between the toes in places esp. in winter. After crossing a small stream (look for Koura at night) Christies Tk has a short steep uphill back to the road. Turn left and follow the road through to Huia Dam and a bridge on your left takes you up Smiths Rd to Hamilton Tk. Go uphill on a single track (well formed) to Hamilton Tk Summit (large signboard here). At this junction take Summit Track north and climb up and over the ridge back to the Christies/Summit junction. From here follow your nose back down the steps over the dam and back to the car.

Takes in Upper Nihotipu Dam (runs across it) and Huia Dam lake, Christies Track streams and great technical single track, forestry roads connect up to Hamilton Track and some technical single trail across the ridge on Summit Track

Easy.

Note Connect Track is closed for Kauri Dieback protection so this course includes taking the gravel roads to connect Christies and Hamilton Tk via the Huia Dam roading system (still very nice running surrounded by bush)

Very patchy.

Thermal leggings, Long-sleeved thermal top, Seam-sealed waterproof jacket, Windproof jacket, Beanie/thermal headwear, Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Survival blanket, Cellphone, Map

Various small streams you could use if you had to at your own risk - I have without any bugs or gremlins to date

Warning Christies Tk contains mud, you may get your shoes dirty and your legs may change colour.

Trail Reviews

I think this guide should come with a 'winter mud warning'. I fully admit to being a novice and a slow plodder but I found the majority of Christies track to be unrunnable due to mud, trail debris, mud, tree roots and did I mention the mud?! I don't dispute the fun of sliding around in the mud but not when I would liked to have run more. Oh well - the views were stunning and was a great day out.

A run of contrasts. In the winter Christie's is a slick mud-bath and you really need to watch your feet, but right a good portion of the run is gravel road where you can relax a bit.
