Detailed directions are below, however it’s probably simplest to follow the route GPX trace. It’s more of a natural run route than it looks on paper, but there are a lot of intersections and turns. The route is a combination of cemetery roads, pathways, trail, and grass verge.
Road names are referenced, they are generally well sign posted throughout the cemetery and also labelled on the cemetery map (see link included).
From the gate, head left on Eucalyptus, and past the Influenza Pandemic Memorial on your right. After 400m turn left onto Agathis, and follow this secondary road on a mini loop of another 400m before coming back to the primary road on your left. At the roundabout ahead take the path to the right and then straight across the road towards the water tank and onto the road there. Follow it very briefly to the right before picking up a path to your left which very shortly enters the trees and turns into trail.
Take the right each time at the eventual three forks that follow. The last of these spits you out onto the cemetery lawn. Follow down the fence line to your left, running parallel to Awaroa Road, then turn right and parallel to Great North Road.
Once in the Jewish section, follow the olive tree pathway down past the Holocaust Memorial to the road. Proceed down the road a very short distance then pick up another footpath to the left that curves to parallel the boundary once more. Follow this straight down and onto the grass to follow the fenceline to the Erebus Memorial. Proceed on past the cemetery main gate along the fenceline. Where the trees come down to the fence line, you will need to jump the fence briefly onto the roadside footpath, which then curves back into the cemetery. Go past the Auckland Provincial Memorial and then along the fence line, now alongside Glenview Road.
Where there is a secondary gate onto Glenview, turn right, then right again on the cemetery road, then left down Anzac Parade. Angle down across the lawn onto Freesia Road and follow this curving through the cemetery.
Arriving at a crossroad proceed right, then follow this road around hooking left (Watsonia Way) and then right again (Acmena Avenue) then left again (Soldiers Way). Immediately on the right enter Quartermaster Quadrant and follow the loop around and back before proceeding on the same direction on Solider’s Way briefly. Then angle left onto the Natural Burial Track through a bush section.
This comes out to a road (Amber Crescent) that you take to the left. Then hard right up Narcissus Drive and follow it curving around. At the Nobilo Mausoleum angle right up the hill and across the grass to go down the short road to the left, then left again on a long straight downhill road through the middle of the cemetery (Acmena Avenue once more). Take the eventual right onto Freesia and back down to the crossroads we encountered earlier, then right (Kowhai Road) and follow the road as it curves around back to the starting point.
The route passes the New Zealand Influenza Epidemic Memorial, Holocaust Memorial, Auckland Provincial Memorial, and various war memorials
There is one set of public toilets, just over 6km into the route, on the corner of Acmena and Orchid.
There is generally parking available near the starting point, which is close to the Glen Eden train station and bus routes.
