This includes the brand new track extending the Skyline all the way to Churton Park, easy to follow the purple-topped navigation posts. This run is an out and back, via the steep trail options near the top of Kaukau and the flowing trail back down. This route includes the Kaukau trig which is a great spot for views over the South Island and Makara wind farm.

Start from Churton Park (by 60 Erlestoke Cres) following switchbacks up, then down through farmland, before crossing Ohariu Valley Road. When you get to Ohariu Valley Rd the trail continues across the road about 50m to your right. Follow more switchbacks to join Old Coach Road and the main track south to Mt Kaukau. Turn right just before the transmitter tower and take the trail up to the Mt Kaukau trig, turn around there and head back to the Mt Kaukau lookout platform (currently closed off) then down the hill towards Khandallah park and take the trail to the left to join the easy mountain bike trail (if you get to the stile you've gone too far) and follow that back down the hill. That trail criss-crosses the trail you came up on and you can rejoin at various points before heading back on to the farmland.

This trail includes the peak Kaukau.

Dog friendly but keep them on the lead: there is often cattle and sheep on the Skyline and it’s home to kiwi.

Street parking. There's a bus stop about 50m from the trail head. (Looks like the Number 19 bus is the best option for public transport.)

Easy.

Keep an eye out for the purple topped posts marking the Skyline walkway.

Perfect throughout.

Seam-sealed waterproof jacket, Windproof jacket, Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Cellphone, Map

Nil. You’ll need to carry what you need for the whole run.

Can be very windy.

If you’re afraid of cows be aware they’re often near the trail on the Skyline. It’s a busy trail though so they completely ignore humans.

Do you have a suggestion on where to go afterwards for the best coffee / cake / breakfast / brunch / beer?

Trail Reviews

Good trail - first time on the Churton Park extension. As advertised this bit has a lot of switchbacks which interupts your flow, but is a very easy gradient and well (perhaps too well) groomed with a crushed gravel surface. I also enjoyed the single track down from Kaukau (I have only ever done the wide 4WD track. Quite exposed, so need sun protection and can be very windy. It is nowhere near the 1000m of vert - probably more like 650m!
