Alternative to Miners Trail with a fun downhill.

From O'Callaghan Park head right on the river trail and soon you will come to a bridge. Cross the bridge and head straight up Tobins Track which climbs steadily to meet a gravel farm road. Turn right and follow this for a few hundred metres until you see a stile on your left (signposted Bracken Saddle).

Cross the stile and follow the trail along the fenceline uphill. Cross another stile at the top of the paddock and turn left along the water race for a few hundred metres before picking up orange marker poles heading uphill across an open slope. This leads you into a beautiful gorged valley, past a derelict miners cottage (all that remains is the chimney) to a junction at 6.5km. Turn left towards Arrowtown and follow the 4WD track which is Peters Way. Do NOT turn onto Miners Trail. Descend down Peters Way. At the bottom of the hill head straight ahead and there is a short steep climb up to New Chum Track, then head left until you reach Tobins Track. Head down Tobins to the end.

Chinese Village or Arrowtown.

Parking at O'Callaghan Park or Wilcox Green. Can also start at Chinese village.

Trail Reviews

A beautiful little loop - especially in autumn. Easy access makes this doable post-work or quick weekend jaunt. For a little extra vert, take the quick side trip up Mt Beetham (seasonally open).
