Work out the timing to avoid high tide.
Parking at the road end carpark for Okia/Victory Beach walk. Be considerate about parking in this spot it can get busy. The first kilometre is flat and straight grass track, until reaching the Pyramid. Follow signs to the left for loop track.
Enjoy following the cliff above you on the left until you reach a junction with a sign directing you to the right. Follow it along until reaching a left turn on a steeper uphill track heading directly to the beach. At the next junction there is the option to turn right and run parallel to the beach (bad weather option) or drop onto the beach and turn right. Watch out for sealions in the bushes. Give them plenty of room on the beach.
Follow the beach for 2.5 km to the inlet to Papanui. Stay close to the vegetation on the right. There is a channel that is easy to end up on the wrong side of and end up waist deep in water with sealions not too far away.
Just over 1 km up the inlet there is a house on the right. Just before the house, near the wreck of an old trailer/vehicle there is a gap in the vegetation, a stile over the fence and a sign. Follow the undulating trail back to the pyramids staying left at any junctions. The bad weather alternative also re-joins the trail along here.
Don't forget to explore the cave at the Pyramid before following the trail you started on back to the carpark.
The Pyramid and cave at Okia (Te Matai o Okia). Volcanic columns of rock. The wreck of the SS Victory (at low tide), Sealions and penguins.
