This can be run in either direction but description starts from Kaitoke.
From Marchant Road head up Dobson's Loop Track to Marchant Ridge, over Omega, through the Hell's Gate Saddle to Alpha Hut. This is approximately halfway time-wise. Ignore the turnoffs for Bull Mound, Omega and Block 16 tracks.
Emerge above the bushline and contine over Alpha and Aston until you reach Mount Hector. This exposed ridge is known as the Dress Circle and is well-known for it's mud and wind (check forecast before you leave home!).
Mount Hector (1,529 m) is the highest point along the route and bears a large wooden cross as a memorial to trampers who lost their lives during World War II.
Another climb up Field Peak and you arrive at Kime Hut, and from here it's largely downhill (with a few bumps) across Table Top to Field Hut, then back into the bush and out to Otaki Forks.
This trail includes the peaks Mount Hector, Alpha, Omega and Field Peak.
Tararua goblin forest along Marchant Ridge Brilliant views from the tops if you're lucky. Mount Hector bears a large wooden cross (that was first erected in 1950) as a memorial to trampers who lost their lives during World War II. "Field hut was one of the first purpose built tramping huts in the country, and is the oldest surviving recreational hut in the Tararua Ranges" (DOC)
There are toilets at the Otaki Forks carpark and all the huts along the way. Note there is no toilet at the Kaitoke carpark
There are carparks at both ends of the trail. Kaitoke - Kiwi Ranch Road car park. Otaki Forks - approx. 1hr 30 min drive from Wellington, at the end of Otaki Gorge Road. No public transport but you could consider catching the train to Upper Hutt and ubering to Kaitoke carpark.

Hard.
Follow the GPX and always take a compass and map as backup. Check frequently to avoid taking any wrong turnoffs.
Very patchy.
Thermal leggings, Long-sleeved thermal top, Seam-sealed waterproof jacket, Gloves, Beanie/thermal headwear, Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Survival bag, Survival blanket, Cellphone, Compass, Map
Water is available at all the huts, however it is up to you whether you drink it as is or use sterilizing tablets or a filter. Otherwise no streams. It is a long way to Alpha so take plenty of water with you.
Check forecasts carefully all year as the tops are very exposed and may be dangerous when there is snow or if there are strong winds. In true Tararua style, parts of the trail can be extremely muddy.
People have died on this route so don't take hazards for granted. Pay particular attention to wind forecasts as the tops are very exposed. Always take extra layers with you.
Post-storms be prepared for wind fall along Marchant and in the bush section from Field Hut.
Do you have a suggestion on where to go afterwards for the best coffee / cake / breakfast / brunch / beer?
