Easy trail run starting and finishing at the Junction end of Ohakune.

Starting on Old Station Road, by the bike Pump Track, follow the scoria path west, to the intersection with Marshalls Road, turning right here and continuing along the quiet country road to the start of the Old Coach Road. This is a flat and easy 2.3km warm up, before you start on the tail end of the Old Coach Road (watch out for bikers coming down the hill). Follow the Old Coach Road all the way to the viaduct. This is the only hilly part of the trail, but is a mix bag of fun on some newly upgraded trail.

Once over the Hapuawhenua Viaduct, there is a picnic table and toilet, beyond that is a large wooden fence. Go through here, closing behind you, and follow the 4x4 track back along the train tracks to Ohakune. There are several level track crossings so keep an ear out for trains, but this is a frequently used piece of track.

Also enjoyed backwards (slightly easier).

Hapuawhenua Viaduct.

Ohakune Train Station near the start and a Long Drop at the Viaduct.

Heaps of free and safe parking, either on Thames St, or the Ohakune Mountain Road carpark.

Easy.

Well marked trails.

Generally good.

Windproof jacket, Cellphone, Map

At the start only, water fountain at the Junction on the Village Green.

Good year round but in the winter, remember you're in an alpine environment.
Watch out for swooping magpies in late winter, stick closer to the banks where possible so they don't have a clear path.

Do you have a suggestion on where to go afterwards for the best coffee / cake / breakfast / brunch / beer?
