Phipps Peak sits on the main divide at Arthur's Pass. Start at the Temple Basin car park and head up through scrub onto the west ridge (no track) which steepens and narrows higher up – fairly straightforward until you reach an obstacle on the ridge which can be turned by clambering up a short steep gully on the left (north) side. Then up and onto the top for great views. Easiest to descend the same way – the alternative (traversing the striking ridge along to Mt Temple) is a classic Arthur's Pass alpine traverse but requires confidence on steep exposed rock.
