Starting from the car park head up the Codgers trail until you meet Tantragee Rd, follow the road for a further couple of hundred metres then turn right before you reach the Tantragee Saddle & follow the trail up the Dun Mountain Trail.
At approx. the 7km mark take a left turn at a well-formed 4-way intersection up Fringed Hill. This climb is approx. 2.5km and quite steep in places. When you reach the gravel road, continue uphill to the right for another 200m or so before turning off the road to your right to the summit of the hill. From here you head into the bush along Black Diamond Ridge for a couple of km. Just follow the trail straight ahead at any intersections & in approx. 2 km you re-join the Dun Mountain Trail where you turn right. In approx. 1km you will pass the 3rd House (Historical site on the Dun Mt Trail) & from here you have a 9km gradual downhill run all the way back to the car.
This trail includes the peak Fringed Hill.
A lot of this run is on the Dun Mt trail, which is NZ's oldest railway line.

Track is pretty good all year around. It does get snow on the peak, so wear appropriate clothing in winter.

Nice run. Much of the uphill from Cummins spur/Fiur corners is unrunnable for me (too steep). I like Black Diamond Ridge but also a combination of too steep/too technical up and down for me to run for about half of it. Today (April 2023) the downhill is affected by slips and closed with a detour along the Brook Sanctuary fence which runs parallel to the actual track from Third House to the Four corners junction. It’s not too different from the main track in runability. But I’m not sure my FKT should count given it’s not on the same track as everyone else…

Lots of MTB about - but on the plus side it is graded for MTB so it is endlessly runnable uphill (till the Fringed Hill turnoff anyway). Love the bit through the bush! That section makes the run IMO. Cruisy way to catch some great views. Enjoyed it as an out-of-towner :)

Great run, but its 850 vert gain in total, not over 1,200 as stated. Overall very runnable, about 3 to 4 km after the peak of Flagged Hill is on technical single trail and is slower going, but the reward is the awesome native bush that youre travelling through over those kms. The last ten km or so is an ideal gradual downhill that you can really open up on if you like. Great route.

Great run, good variety of terrain an great views. I would suggest hitting the trail early as there were a lot of MTB's heading out as I was coming in at around 9am.Also a 3k run from central city if you have no wheels

These overlap with this trail to some degree. You may wish to combine them but please note that to qualify for FKTs on these runs you should record a separate activity for each.
