Classic Tararua run with steep sections of track, lots of tree roots, a bit of mud, gaining elevation along a ridge line. Technical track.
Enter the track at the sign, cross bridge, and turn R) at sign for Blue Range Hut.
Track continues on, once it starts to climb, this is continuous until the top with some steeper parts.
Take care of slippery tree roots.
At top of ridge, track splits to go Cow Creek Hut (LEFT) and Blue Range Hut (RIGHT), clearly sign posted, with short downhill to the Blue Range Hut.

There is a DOC camp and picnic ground at the end of the road, with plenty of parking, covered area and toilets.

Moderate.

Is well signposted at junctions and has orange markers, trail relatively easy to follow if you are used to back country tracks

Very patchy.

Long-sleeved thermal top, Seam-sealed waterproof jacket, Beanie/thermal headwear, Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Cellphone, Map.

Water is available at hut, drink at own risk

Tararuas so weather can change in short time and be terrible at any time of year.
Track is softer when in wet season, but still negotiable, just take care on the tree roots and muddier sections

Trail Reviews

Loved this trail until the point where my normally awesome trail dogs took off into the Bush. My 1 hr 40 run/hike turned into a 6 1/2 hour mission but finally found them just as it got dark. Quite muddy and slippery after a few days of rain. Pleased I had taken extra layers as it was chilly up at the hut.
