This trail is also an out-and-back half marathon, but you might equally just want to run one way. You can start the track from the Woodville or Ashhurst end.
From either end the track climbs steadily (and steeply in places) before levelling out for a spell high above the gorge. Five viewpoints along the way give spectacular views of the river, road, railway, reserve and turbines at nearby windfarms.It is pretty much all nice single track and well signposted.
An extra 4km loop option is available at the Ashhurst end of the track.
Great forest. Nice views. Peaceful.
Toilets at both trailheads.
From the west (Palmerston North/Ashhurst end), parking is on Napier Road, Ashurst.
From the east (Woodville end) access is from the Ballance end on Gorge Road with parking just across the Ballance Bridge.
