This is a straight up ridge grunt that gets the legs burning. The first KM gives you a little bit of a moderate hill warm up before things get going. Poles would be good if you are familiar with them. Open single track and tussock ridge lines lead you to the summit and its spectacular views of the Hakatere basin and its surrounding mountains. Touch the cairn and after a quick refresh, get the legs ready for a speedy descent. Enjoy!

This trail includes the peak Mount Barrosa.

A good view of the classic Mount Somers trails with some interesting rock features of its own hidden within the side gullies.

Park at the pull out for the Mt Barrosa trail - DOC sign.

Moderate.

There are a couple of small bluffs that you come up to on your way up which you traverse right (east) under. There is some lose rocks underfoot so take care to keep your speed in check on the way down. There is cell coverage at the summit. You lose cell phone coverage a few KMs out from Mount Somers village.

Very patchy.

Short-sleeved thermal top, Seam-sealed waterproof jacket, Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Cellphone, Map

There is a stream at the very start - this may have stock access though.

During winter snow can cover the route. There was a dusting of snow along the last 500m when I was up there in July.

Some lose rock underfoot in the last KM

Mount Somers shop ice creams are pretty good

Loved this trail! The views were incredible.

In my element. A good nudge up and downhill takes a bit of thinking at times but can zip down all the same.

Loved it! Bit of easy trail to start then lots of ridgeline fun all the way up to the peak.
