From the carpark run down the road about 10m and you'll see the Te Otamanui walkway. Follow this gravel path along the stream all the way to the end, keeping right.
Then come back, this time turning right at the bridge to run the extra along the other side.
Not at the start, however, there's a public toilet in Whatawhata, 6km away, by the Rugby Club.
