This is a scenic over-and-back of the Parihaka summit, from Mair Park to Dundas Road and back again via the Dobbie Track and Ross Track. You could do it in reverse but you'll get a flatter warm up this way and there's better parking too.

Starting at Mair Park, follow the main track about 200m to the bridge, give your shoes a clean for Kauri dieback, then cross the bridge and turn left alongside the river. You'll come to an intersection about 400m from the bridge - take the Dobbie Track on the right (the left continues up river towards Whangārei Falls). It's all uphill from here - but beautiful!

When you reach the summit, continue over the other side down the Ross Track. This side of the maunga is a lot steeper than the Dobbie Track side. You'll hit a junction about 900m down - stay right. The Dundas Road exit is not too much further. There's not much to see once you get to Dundas Road - all the good stuff is behind you. Turn around and go back the way you came so that you can enjoy the scenery all over again.

This trail includes the peak Parihaka.

Gorgeous forest and nice, runnable surface, although steep. There's a pā site about 3/4 up toward the summit, just a short diversion off the route. The viewing platform at the summit offers a view over the city and harbour.

Toilets at Mair Park.

There's a reasonable amount of parking along Rurumoki Street, might be busy in peak times though. Limited parking at Dundas Road (at the far end of the run.)

Easy.

There are two simple junctions where newcomers might get momentarily confused. The first is the Dobbie Track junction and the second is about 900m down the Ross Track. Just remember to turn right both times and you'll stay on course. Then on the way back, turn left each time instead of right. Ignore any turnoffs to the Drummond Track.

Generally good.

Cellphone, Map

None.

Steep steps on the Ross Track side - could be dicey in winter.
