The Parihaka Trail run starts at Otuihau Whangarei Falls, following the trail to the base of the falls and continues on the Hatea walkway through to AH Reed Memorial Park. Complete a loop of AH Reed on the trails and come out at the foot cleaning station and carpark.

Across from AH Reed carpark you will see the Goatzee track. Follow the Goatzee track until you get to Spider Junction, where you will take a left turn down Forest Ridge road no1 and descend till you get to the Parihaka mountain bike park. It is worth noting that the following mountain bike trails are closed to runners except for during the Parihaka Trail event.

Run up the ‘White tail’ mountain bike trail till you get to the intersection of Forest Ridge Road and Southern access road. Run across onto Southern access road and follow for approximately 1km till you get to ‘Climbax’ which will appear on your right-hand side. Climb ‘Climbax’ till you reach Spider Junction where you will climb ‘Mac Attack’ till you get back onto Forest Ridge Road.

Climb Forest Ridge Road to the top where you will come onto Memorial Drive, and keep climbing till you get to the summit of Parihaka. Descend the Ross Track till the Macasey bush track appears on your left (if you reach the waterfall, you’ve run 60 metres too far).

On the Mackasey bush track be prepared to climb stairs (lots of them). Follow the trail until it forks where you will take the right track and descend to Memorial Drive. Follow Memorial drive onto Riverside Drive where you want to be running into the city till you reach Vale Road. Run up Vale Road to the end and enter the Hatea track, follow the Hatea track to Whareora Road.

Turn right and follow Whareora Road till you get back to AH Reed Memorial Park where you follow the Hatea walkway back to the start-finish area.

This trail includes the peak Parihaka.

Explore a mixture of native, forestry, and MTB trails as you navigate your way around Whangarei's most popular offroad running routes.

Trail Reviews

I did this event in January 2021. It was super hot but such a great event. A powhiri to kick it off then time navigating the trails and hills around Whangārei. Hard to believe you're so close to the city.
