"Onerahi foreshore and Waimahanga"

An easy, flat but scenic and varied run that is always accessible -Te tai Tokerau/Northland has copped more than it's fair share of wild weather with slips and track closures so this is a reliable trail for all weathers.

Start near the Onerahi foreshore boat ramp and toilets on Beach road and run past toilets and nearby playground, continuing on the grass along the foreshore. lots of pohutakawas bloom here in summer and the sea views are always lovely.

Onto the shared path for a short distance, up a slight rise and continue on shared path across the road -this shortly becomes a lovely wide dirt trail through mangroves and bush, and across a few bridges. The end of the track is the turn around for this out and back course. It's a perfect Mild Things run but for the fast and furious it is a great track to do speed intervals!

For a much longer run - continue along the road past the end of the Waimahanga track, back onto the shared path, past a bus shelter then turn left and the shared path follows Riverside drive all the way to Te Matau A Pohe (bascule bridge) and the very popular Hatea loop. Keep going and there are signposted connections across to tracks up and around Parihaka maunga and Whangarei Falls.

Brilliant blooming pohutakawa trees in Summer. Kahikatea planted in bush section. Pretty coastline and sea views. Views over to historic Limestone Island (accessible via short boat ride or kayak etc in calm weather) Nice safe swimming areas.

Run starts beside well maintained public toilets.

Plenty of parking at the start for private cars and campervan parking too. There is also parking area just past the turn around.

Easy.

Harrd to go wrong. When the shared path ends at brow of hill on outward journey, cross the road with care and the continuation of the path is directly ahead on other side of the road.

Generally good.

Short-sleeved thermal top, Seam-sealed waterproof jacket, Beanie/thermal headwear, Whistle, Cellphone

Water fountain at start of run between toilets and playground.

Generally fine to run any time of year - always big puddles to skip through after rain.

The Kafe
Riverside drive on Hatea loop walkway
lovely views across marina to town basin and awesome coffee and scones. dog friendly with a sheltered outside seating area

Do you have another suggestion on where to go afterwards for the best coffee / cake / breakfast / brunch / beer?
