You can no longer loop up by going over Whakapaewaka Bridge, so take the opportunity to go up the stairs to top of Puketoromiro Pa and continue along the bike trail once completed.

Description

Head down the gravel track in front of The Lakes Playground. Cross the wooden bridge before heading left at the fork to Double Bay Road. Cross the road into Koikoi Reserve and head through Matatu Reserve Playground onto Lakes Boulevard. Continue round Lakeview Quay turning right onto Landing Drive.

Cross the road to Ngakumama Reserve. Go over the overbridge over SH36 before turning left down a gravel track just before the BP which takes you underneath the roundabout. Run along the track/cycle trail under SH29A and parallel to Takitumu Drive at which point the track becomes paved. Head past the blue sign pointing to the right over a bridge to “The City” and continue running straight.

Turn left towards Cambridge Park/Bethlehem/via Whakapaewaka Bridge. This takes you past views to the left of what used to be Puketoromiro Pa and then over the bridge proper. Turn right after the bridge towards Waihi Road. You’ll find plenty of blue signs directing you towards Waihi Road and eventually you’ll pass underneath SH2.

Keep running until you reach the steel stairs at McCord Avenue. Head up the stairs, cross the road (watch out for any cars as you’re now on proper roads) and turn right then right again down Koromiko Street. At the end turn right to Kopurererua Stream and head down grass track with the stream on your right. Head under three overpasses (SH2 and SH29 on and offramps) at which point you’ve reached Kopurererua Valley Reserve.

Stay on the gravel track ignoring the bridges and turn-offs for Faulkner Street, Tom Muir Drive and Wylie Street. Go through a gate and run along the grass with Tauranga Golf Course off to the left. Wind your way along the farmland past the turnoff to Marshall Avenue before travelling over two bridges back to the first blue sign noted earlier (“The City”).

Turning left over the bridge takes you back under SH29A, under the roundabout and back over the overbridge across SH36. On the other side of the overbridge turn right and right again across the small bridge in Ngakumama Reserve. Once over the bridge veer left onto Landing Drive until you reach Scoria Close. Cross the road immediately and turn left onto a short paved track which will take you to the lake. Turn right onto the gravel track and continue running around the lake back to the start of the run.

  • Staying Safe

    Easy.

    Perfect throughout.

Windproof jacket, Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Cellphone, Map.

There is water available at the playground.

There is a patch on the farmland which can get waterlogged after heavy rain, so you might get your feet wet.

As the route has a small portion on roads there might be cars, so usual care should be taken.
