If you just want a 80% trail run in Riverhead - after all forestry roads get a bit boring after a while, this trail offers that.

Start at the entrance on Barlow Road and head right into the forestry trail after a short 100m. The trail is easy and undulates through the woods for about 3km until it meets Strip Road briefly. Here you veer left to the end of the road where you enter the bush again to the left.

At 3.2KM be prepared for a very steep ascent for about 0.5km and then you pop up onto Barlow NW Skid Road. Follow the road for a bit and then hang a sharp left and continue up the road before turning left back into the forest at around 4.3km. Stay on the trail crossing over Hansen Road and continuing on for another km.

Once you're at 6km the gpx map will try to take you up through bush where there's no obvious trail however just stay to the left and follow the trail up and curving around to the right where you continue in a easterly direction and then swinging up to the north.

At the 6.8km mark hang a sharp left for a short distance where you will emerge onto road again. Turn right and then almost immediately turn left onto Anzac Road. Here is the only long stretch of road in the run - 1.8km to Campbell Road where you continue to the left for another 600m.

Say goodbye to the road and turn left into the bush for an easy 1km of trail back to the start.

Plenty of parking available. Usually people about, dog walkers and cyclists.
