Coastal paths, native bush and steep volcanic terrain, all within easy reach of New Plymouth.
Mount Taranaki is the obvious drawcard, but there's plenty of good trail running across the region beyond the mountain itself. Native bush, coastal tracks, farmland and some seriously steep hills give you a decent mix of terrain.
Around New Plymouth, you've got coastal paths and shorter bush trails, while Egmont National Park (Te Papakura o Taranaki) offers longer, tougher outings through forest and up onto the mountain. Head further inland and there's more remote country to explore.
The weather can change quickly here, particularly on the mountain, but there's enough variety around Taranaki to find somewhere to run in most conditions.
