Can be completed in either direction. If you start at the bridge and go anti-clockwise (Soldiers Big River Road) you get the road out of the way first, plus it's a shallower climb, rather than the opposite direction where the climb is steeper, but probably more picturesque. The track is signposted 'Zig Zags' or 'Lookout' throughout and is easily followed. You get some cool views of the town in a very short period of time as you pass through the pine and native forests.

Trail Reviews

Correction to my previous comment, the unsignposted left turn is off Soldiers Road.

Great loop to do when stopping off in Reefton for the night. I did it in the suggested direction which meant the uphill was runnable. Would be a fast downhill the other way. There was no signpost fir the left turn off SH7 onto the gravel road though but was obvious looking at the topo map.
