Description
This provided a much shorter alternative to the full Urchin-Umukarikari Loop if you're short on time but want to bag a peak.
This out and back track is quite a climb but wow, those views at the top make you forget all about the climb you endured. The first 2km are continuous climbing, the 3rd km is undulating and last 700 metres you are above the tree line and clamber up along some loose stones. Very exposed at the top.

Access
15km south of Turangi on State Highway 1 (Desert Road), take a left on to Kaimanawa Road. There is a right turn and a left turn on to unnamed roads, so keep an eye out for signs for Mt Urchin Track. For the last 2kms or so, 4wd is definitely recommend as there is some steep gravel and mud at times. There is a small space for carparking at the base of the track
No public transport available. 4WD recommended

Staying Safe
Moderate.
Follow the orange triangles - they'll see you right, but there really is only the one trail
Non-existent.
Long-sleeved thermal top, Seam-sealed waterproof jacket, Gloves, Beanie/thermal headwear, Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Cellphone, Map.
No water available en-route.
The final 700 metre climb is hazardous and extremely exposed, so if it is too windy, do not attempt to reach the ridge
