From riverside paths to bush trails and bigger runs out of town, Hamilton has plenty of options when you want to get off the road.
The Waikato River gives Hamilton plenty of easy running close to town, with paths and trails stretching along both sides of the river. There are also patches of bush, parks and reserves to link together when you want something a bit more interesting.
For bigger hills and rougher trails, head out of the city and the options quickly open up. The wider Waikato has everything from short forest loops to steep climbs and longer days out, with the Kaimai Range opening up some properly rugged country to the east.
Hamilton might not be the first place that springs to mind for trail running, but there's plenty to explore — and some properly good trails within easy reach.
