Getting to Weraroa can be challenging - I went via Mt Pureora Summit Link track - then down unmaintained track to Bog inn hut - Then Weraroa track (Hauhangaroa traverse track). The track after Bog Inn is overgrown in sections and lots of windfall as the track is not well used nor maintained often. Having some form of navigation is essential as its easy to loose the trail. From the peak you can turn around go back the way you came- or carry on. As you descend down from Weraroa the navigation becomes much, much trickier and you need to pay attention going around windfall (these are massive trees I'm talking!) We spent what it felt like 20mins trying to find the track again - atl east 3 times! This was in 2024 - I am not sure if any one has put new track markers up since then (that would be super helpful if they have) but if you attempt this beast but spectacular part of alpine native 'untouched' mossy podacarp forest be prepared for a long adventure day out. You could choose to exit out at Waihora track or go all the way to Waihaha hut and exit out Via Waihaha mtb/walking track (my garmin clocked 40+ km, 1400+ elevation, 10+hours on feet)
