The best approach is from the north - climb the Cascade Saddle Track from Aspiring Hut and leave it at 'The Pylon' to follow the ridge pretty much due south towards Pt 2017. Higher up (at around 2,300m) you'll encounter the Isobel snowfield, which is easily crossed using micro-spikes and poles in good conditions. If conditions are poor you really don't want to be here! The final pinch to the true summit is a bit steep and crumbly - get as close as you're comfortable but don't take any unnecessary risks! I did this in April with no probs. Generally Jan - April would be good but always check the weather forecast and snow conditions before setting out.
