Set at 1,380 m, Lupton Hut was built by Whanganui High School in 1965 and is maintained by the school for the exclusive use of its students. The name refers to chemistry teacher and tramper Mr R Lupton who donated wood for the building.
Members of the public are encouraged to use , 10 minutes beyond Lupton Hut, which is owned and managed by DOC.
