This is a lovely little track along the shores of Lake Taupo, perhaps less frequented than the more popular Huka Falls and Great Lake trails.

The route starts at the last car park (nearest to Rangatira Point), though it would be just as easy to start at the other car parks at Te Kumi Bay or Te Karaka point. Follow the trail into the bush, turn left at the junction, then follow the trail past Rangatira Point to the end at Te Kumi Bay, then return the same way, this time continuing on to Whakamoenga Point.

On the way, you'll come to a private road but follow this and you'll soon see where the track continues. At the point, there are some flat volcanic rocks on the shore - a great spot for swimming or fishing. Look out for the cave on the way too!

Plenty of parking on the side of the road.

Easy.

This one's dead easy. If you take a wrong turn you'll either end up back on Acacia Bay Road or in the lake....

Generally good.

Trail Reviews

Lovely trail. Single track, mainly flat and in the shade! A few walkers, dogs and near by kayak/boat occupants. The track heading west of trail head probably had the better lake/swim acess if you're that way inclined.

Lovely little trail along the side of the lake. Nice bush coverage and enough tree roots to keep things interesting without being technical.

Great trail thanks Joe! Lovely and shady on a hot day, plenty of places for Gus to drink and nice swimming beaches too.
