We have verified with Bike Taupo that it is ok to run the trails as long as you give way to bikes and don't wear headphones (so you can hear the bikes). Please don't cheat, pay the fee before you run, it is great that we can run the trails and we don't want to jeopardise that.

From the road head straight down the access road and ahead you will see an overbridge with "MTB Start" in big letters... head to that and under it and immediately turn right onto Kegresse track.

Follow Kegresse all the way until it ends at a Y intersection with Zip trail, take the left branch of this and carry on Zip, ignoring any off-shoots until you reach a major intersection where Zip heads right towards the Hub (on the sign). Don't go there but turn left and look for the sign for Outwards Goods. This is a short 2-way stretch of trail that leads to Tourist Trap. At this point you are thinking how messy with so many trails... but now you can relax and let loose and follow Tourist Trap for several km's.

Eventually you will come to a major Y split with no signs at about 3km.... take the left branch again and over the road and into the carpark area. Look slightly right across the carpark and you will see the entrance to the trails... head over there and after about 100m of trail you will see the trail sign for Scraggs trail. Hop onto Scraggs and away you go. At about 4km you will head through an under-road pipe tunnel and then into an open area called Managers Corner with several trailheads... look right and head over to S.H.Fun.

Hop on to S.H.Fun and once again just stay on the trail. At about 5.5km you will reach an intersection with Bumblebee (BBC). Take the right-hand turn into BBC and then right again. BBC is another trail with pretty much no exits... there is one confusing bit with no obvious main trail, however they had taped a trail between the trees and that is the route you are after. Keep following BBC and eventually it will pop you out at the start of your run. So much more to explore in there so go fill your boots!

Plenty of space to park.

Moderate.

Download an app called Trailforks... it works with your GPS in your phone and shows you very accurately where you are and where the trails are. Failing that, take my notes and take your time.

Generally good.

Lightweight fleece top, Seam-sealed waterproof jacket, Beanie/thermal headwear, Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Cellphone, Map

Take your own

Taupo, being volcanic drains very well, so trails are generally dry

MTB's, stay vigilant and give way to them
