Park near the toilets/tourist information area. Take the lake track, and enjoy a 4km lakeside (flat) warm-up.
Back at the carpark, and it's time to hit the Ridge Track. Get your quads ready, lots of steps.... 1220 in fact! This takes you up and alongside the perimeter fence with excellent views of the lake and surrounding farmland. Worth the climb!
You'll come back down through the bush (well sign posted), then hang a right (sign-posted for carpark) and you'll arrive back at the carpark! Enjoy the sounds of nature!
This is a gorgeous, pest-free reserve in the heart of Taranaki. Dogs are strictly prohibited.
At the parking/public information area there is public toilets.
You will need to drive there (unless you are a keen cyclist!) Lots of parking available

Non-existent.
Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Cellphone, Map
There is a tap in the carpark, but i'm not sure if the water is drinkable
A bit muddy, but nothing a Wild Thing can't handle!
Can get quite windy up the ridge by the perimeter fence. The steps are quite steep also.

I had a lovely time here. Felt like going into Jurassic Park going through the double gates at the entrance.Dreamy forest tracks with all the bird sounds. Worth the effort to get up to the ridgeline for the views. Lots

Chose a feisty morning to run this track but the birds and views of Maunga Taranaki and Maunga Ruapehu were spectacular in the early morning. Slightly muddy underfoot but a magical place to run.

My Garmin read just over10k on this one. Gorgeous day running through the bush with Tieke, Hihi and Robins serenading me. Solid stair climbs on the ridgeline trail (good UTA training when we can travel again). Probably not the best idea to run this one a couple of days after heavy rainfall - muddy doesn’t begin to describe it! So much fun and recommended.
