There are several places you can start this trail, but starting from the sign on Doctors Point Road, head out along the boardwalk and then onto the grass trail and follow through to where it sends you out onto Killarney Street, this is mainly gravel so almost like trail anyway.

Keep following the road for 100m, on past the wee kink until the road goes hard right but you go left - follow the grass trail and head over the footbridge and the left onto the trails again.

Follow the trail, mainly grass at this stage, as it works its way around and along the edge of a farm. As you get past the farm you will see a DOC sign on your right and next to that a large door like gate. Head through the gate, closing it behind you and follow the trail all the way to the edge of the Orokonui Sanctuary Fence....

Turn right and head up the gravel Perimeter Track for about 200 until you reach the high point where it levels off. Turn here and admire the view, then head all the way back to the gate by the DOC sign.

Through that gate and turn right onto the Lagoon Track again and follow this all the way back to Doctors Point Road, the last 100m are on Chelivode Street which is also gravel.

When you reach the Sanctuary Fence, take the time to look through the fence straight across, as this is one of Orokonui's Takahe areas. Also when you reach the top of the Perimiter Track before you turn around... look to the gum trees to you right in the sanctuary... one of them is the tallest tree in New Zealand.

Generally good.

Long-sleeved thermal top, Windproof jacket, Gloves, Beanie/thermal headwear, Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Cellphone, Map

There is a stream for much of the trail... not sure of drinkability.

Do you have a suggestion on where to go afterwards for the best coffee / cake / breakfast / brunch / beer?
