From the north end of Waihi Beach take the DoC track over to Orokawa Bay, then after the beach continue north to join the Homunga Bay Track which is just over the second creek crossing. Follow this track all the way to Homunga Bay. At Homunga, you can drop to the right down to the beach for a look or turn left and head up, up, up on "the Nugget Climb of Death" to Ngatitangata Road. If you're going one way you can arrange for to be picked up here, or if you're going out and back, turn around and follow your footsteps back to Waihi Beach.

Coastal trail with large pohutukawa and puriri. Very scenic clifftop tracks with two beautiful beaches to explore.

Park in the car park at the north end of Waihi Beach. There are toilets and showers handy, and there's great swimming in front of the surf club.

Hard.

There are a couple of turnoffs but if you keep an eye on the signs and follow the orange DoC markers you'll find it easy to navigate.

Patchy.

Long-sleeved thermal top, Beanie/thermal headwear, Whistle, First aid kit, Survival blanket, Cellphone, Map

There is no water available on this track. All of the creeks drain from farms inland so I wouldn't recommend drinking from them. Carry your own.

It's pretty weather-proof. Some of the creek crossings may be a bit swift and deep during severe and sustained rainy periods, but it's usually open all year round.

Take care around cliff tops. The track is quite narrow in places with a few tree roots. If you go over the side it will be a long tumble to the rocks and sea below.

Trail Reviews

Simply beautiful. Covers pretty much same ground as The Great OH Trail but the detour out to Ngatitangata Road takes you through open farmload which provides sensational views. Like all the other Waihi Beach coastal tracks, care is needed as off the side of the track is a straight drop off cliffs. Thanks for sharing Mark.

Straight up stunning!! I loved this run, it had everything.....I think I will always have great memories from this trail, I'd lost my number one running buddy for about a year due till illness and this was our first little adventure back together, I am so stoked we shared this beautiful coasted run together.

It's a great run to challenge yourself esp on the Nugget Climb of Death. Great views on the way up. I have done this as part of the Nugget and also just as a run with friends.
