For the experienced and off track navigation savvy - Falling Mountain can be accessed from Mount White Road. Hawdon Shelter trail head > Hawdon Hut > Walker Pass > then continuing untracked up a stream towards the basin under Amber Col > rock garden to the peak. The peak was named after the magnitude 7.1 Arthur’s Pass earthquake on 9 March 1929, when 900-metre-high section of the mountain peak collapsed onto Taruahuna Pass, close to the epicentre.
