About the Challenge:
Rab is thrilled to bring you this devious, grunty 1-month challenge!
- For any walk/hike/run, the challenge points you earn will equal the elevation of your activity x 10
- ...but if your run is on a Wild Things trail, your points will equal the elevation of your activity x grunt instead.
What's grunt?
Grunt is a measure of how demanding a run is. Every Wild Things trail has a grunt factor. You'll find it above the specs, just under the trail title. (Learn more about grunt here.)
Seek out the grunty trails for maximum points! For example...
- Ironside Hill (Wanaka) has 290m elevation and a grunt factor of 13. Points earned: 290 x 13 = 3,770 points.
- Where in the Whakanui (Lower Hutt) has 765m elevation and a grunt factor of 28. Points earned: 765 x 28 = 21,420 points!
Beware the flat, low-grunt trail! For example...
- Flights and Sights (Nelson) has 2m elevation and 5 grunt. Points earned: 2 x 5 = 10 points.
- McLeans Meander (Christchurch) has 25m elevation and 9 grunt. Points earned: 25 x 9 = 225 points.
Easy trails still earn you points, but you might be better off running elsewhere for elevation x 10.
Tips:
- Elevation is calculated from your activity, not the trail's elevation. So, once you've completed a Wild Things trail, you could keep running and add more elevation to your score.
- You can filter trails by Grunt and Total Elevation Gain using the Trail Directory filters.
- To sort by these same metrics, switch to List View and use the Sort menu (hint: you’ll need to deselect “Peaks” from the “Show in List” filter to reveal these extra sort options).

Challenge Prizes:
$1,750 worth of Rab vouchers up for grabs! The Rab crew figured you'd like to choose your own Rab kit, so we have five Rab vouchers to give away (two $500 vouchers and three $250 vouchers). Thanks Rab, you're Rabtastic!
Winners will be drawn at the end of the challenge. The more points you earn, the better your chances. Good luck!
