Starting at the toilets near the Swingbridge you want to turn on the left hand trail just before the Swingbridge (you can detour onto the swing bridge on the way back)

You will be treated with lovely undulating trail under old pines. At 1.6km you will cross the main road at the dam, look out for trucks and cars! Just across the road there is a bit of gravel parking area, which is where the trail begins again. The trail follows the Waikato River and has lots of wee ups and downs, really picturesque and pretty. You will come to your longest climb - the 5 min detour up to the lookout is highly recommended. Youll then make your way down the hill to Jones Landing camping ground.

Return the same way.

Trail Reviews

A favourite trail to incorporate in training plans for Trail events. Handy to Hamilton and has a good variety of terrain especially for events that are going to be held on mountain bike trails. Can be busy with cyclists. A must to complete the detour to the lookout to view Jones Landing and the Waikato countryside , and to cross the swing bridge. .

This will be my new favourite local I think! I really liked it. My favourite part of the Waikato River Trail so far. A few nice little switch backs to get your heart rate up. Enough varying terrain and things to look at to keep it interesting but fairly easy so you can relax and enjoy yourself.

Really nice to run over such easy trains mostly in bush, and breaking into view ar times the river and the bluffs around it. A couple of steep pieces to keep it interesting!

Nice trot along cycle trails. The view from Lookout is very much worth the detour. The swing bridge isn't part of the run so definitely take the time to walk across it when you've finished. Thanks for sharing Linda.
