Description

Sharp 3km climb on zig zag track up to Robert Ridge - Relax Shelter. Then exposed poled route along ridge - technical areas begin at approx 6km. Can be very windy in bad weather. Be careful on large rocks especially if wet conditions. At final 1km point from hut is junction down to Speargrass Track and Angelus Hut is approx 20 mins further along ridge and steep drop down.

Return via the same route (or drop down the Cascade Track to the lake and run back along the western side)

I did it!
  • Access

Approx 85km from Nelson is St Arnaud - go through town and follow signs to Mt Robert Car Park

About 6 km from St Arnaud is Robert Ridge Carpark - you can park overnight here but no camping allowed. Or you can book a Nelson Lakes shuttle from Nelson approx $50-60 per person

  • Staying Safe

    Moderate.

Once on the ridgeline it should be relatively easy to follow the poled route - track is well defined but in bad weather take care not to deviate as there are some steep drop offs

    Very patchy.

Waterproof leggings, Thermal leggings, Lightweight fleece top, Long-sleeved thermal top, Seam-sealed waterproof jacket, Gloves, Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), Whistle, First aid kit, Extra food for emergencies, Survival blanket, Cellphone, Map.

Only at Relax Shelter - tank water so dependent on rain levels - none after this point until you arrive at Angelus Hut. You could divert from Relax Shelter over to Bushline Hut if weather declines too quickly.

Can be exposed to high winds at any time - hot and dry in summer - rocks can be slippery in wet conditions.

Large loose boulders and loose shale can make footing difficult especially in wet

  • Post run indulgence

The garage cafe in St Arnaud has amazing scones, muffins and hot foods perfect if you wanted to do an out and back option - otherwise book a night at angelus Hut and Fast pack it.
