Start of track is easy to find, keep heading up upper Mangaehu Road to Kohi Saddle, will see DoC sign and markers to the right hand side. Head up a farm track before a sharp left into the bush, from there follow orange markers. If you get to a bridge to somewhere (Heritage trail) you have gone to far.

Enjoy yourself a Beautiful Day out in the infrequently visited Whanganui National Park. From the start of the Track its a gradual climb (Runnable) to the junction of Puteore Hut or letterboxes from this point its mostly a gradual downhill to the hut with a few undulating bits thrown in. The track is runnable to the extent you could almost mountain bike it, it is very well bench and cleared at present, track can get a little muddy after rain, be cautious of the rocks as they can be slippery.

Return the same way or make a loop via Puteore hut. On clear days beautiful views out to Mt Ruapehu and Mt Ngāuruhoe.

Beautiful native bush, interesting farming history / Māori History as a old trading track, cool tunnel on the way to the track, good hut system.

Located at the hut - long drop toilet.

Parking is on the left hand side of road 50m away from track start, very remote there and back trip.

Trail Reviews

Great day out exploring the start of the Matemateonga track. Well marked and easy to follow single track, very runnable, minor gradient so not very strenuous, I was hiking for the day. Found I got a small pocket of cell reception just in off the start of the trail for about 3-500m, which was great for checking in
