The trail head is clearly marked at Newgate Street. The track heads straight into the bush and shoots up a series of zigzags and moderate climbs, before a sidling last ascent towards the lookout and the seat that this trail is named after. You will want to linger here and watch the hustle and bustle of Picton at your feet. Imagine for a moment what Picton could be as a standalone tourist destination if the ferries ever moved, as has occasionally been mooted.

From the lookout carry on south on the downward leg, if it's wet the clay trail can get a bit slippery so definitely consider your footwear in regard to conditions. Return to the start around Garden Terrace and Devon Street, picking up the creekside trail that cuts through to Picton township. Keep skirting the foot of the hills back to Newgate St via Broadway (past the cop shop) and Taranaki St/ Waikawa Road. Only a short bit of tarmac on the last km.

Stunning views of Picton and the Sounds for only a small effort

Trail Reviews

Lovely little loop! Great views at the top, nice single track running and some pretty river crossings too.

Nice short run and view even though a wet day. As with earlier comment is slippery on downhill so care needed. Couldn’t run the river trail as closed for bridge painting so bit more tarmac to finish then would have liked!
