Park your car at Coal River Carpark, about 500m past the gate. If the track is muddy or your car has low clearance, park on the road and walk the short section. The hike starts by crossing Coal River, then follows a fence line through open terrain. After a few kilometers, the 4WD track narrows into a single track with a steeper incline.
After about 5km, you'll reach a 4WD road and a junction. Follow the signs to Rex Simpson Hut, a private but unlocked hut where you can take a break. From the hut, continue northeast to reach the ridgeline, which offers stunning views. The ridge is part of the Te Araroa Trail, and you'll pass Point 1615, 1735, and 1944 before reaching Beuzenberg Peak (2070m).
Enjoy the views at Beuzenberg Peak, then head back. Between Beuzenberg Peak and Point 1944, descend and continue towards Stag Saddle. From there, follow the southeast ridge to Mount Hope (2086m). The route is exposed and rocky, so proceed carefully.
The section between Mount Hope and Braun Elwert Peak is tricky, with loose scree and steep terrain. If you're not confident with scree travel, do not attempt it. The descent from Braun Elwert Peak requires good coordination on scree. Around the saddle between Mount Hope and Braun Elwert Peak, descend directly to a small tarn. From the tarn, return to Stag Saddle and follow the same route back to the carpark.
This is a challenging alpine route with steep climbs, exposed ridges, and scree travel, offering breathtaking views, especially from Beuzenberg Peak. Good navigation and mountain experience are essential, particularly beyond Stag Saddle.
This trail includes the peaks Beuzenberg Peak, Mount Hope and Braun-Elwert Peak.
An incredible ridgeline hike with stunning views of the surrounding peaks and Lake Tekapo. Bagging three 2000m peaks in one day—absolute adventure!
Near Rex Simpson hut... but hut is private, so no clue 🥴.
