Description
NOTE: Don't just turn up here - please ring the farm first and jack up your permission (seasonal dependant) and access koha/fee.
Once you've got in touch with Te Pohue Farmstay for permission and sorted the access out, follow the farm tracks around a couple of bays until it starts to climb. A short way into this you'll leave the farm track and pick up a truly exhilarating singe trail that undulates above high sea cliffs and really gives you a wonderful panorama of the Lyttelton Harbour Entrance and over to Godley Head on the other side.
Eventually you round the corner into the sheltered bay that is Little Port Cooper. Descent the steep spur down to the beach. Great history here and if you have time stay overnight at the Little Port Cooper Schoolhouse, which you can book with the farm owner at really decent group rates. This was once a whaling station and also the settlement for families involved with running the Adderley Head Signal Station.
From Little Port Cooper take the old unmarked route that sidles up to Adderley Head. Its a little rough in places these days as DOC has not maintained the trail since the 2011 earthquakes, which sadly turned the Historic Signal Station building into a pile of rubble. Linger a while on this exposed headland, it's truly wild. The return journey is along the hilltops. Pick up fencelines and farm trails to a holding pen area where you drop down to the farm trail that takes you over one last decent hill and some impressive views across the whole Lyttleton Harbour Basin. Connect this 4WD trail all the way back to the homestead.
