Native bush, quiet hills and proper backcountry — Nelson has a lot packed in around it.
Nelson has a great mix of everyday trail running and routes that feel much more remote. Close to town, tracks wind through native bush and climb into the surrounding hills, so it’s easy to sneak in a run without making a whole day of it.
But Nelson is also a gateway to some seriously good backcountry. Head further out and the trails get longer, rougher and quieter, with forest, river valleys and high country opening up plenty of options for a proper mission.
It’s a good place to have running shoes in the car — there’s nearly always something worth exploring nearby.
