This is the steeper way up and down Mt Karioi (and much more fun). It gets very technical in places, with a few precarious sections where you'll be grabbing roots or chains to navigate the steep banks.
From the trail head it's all uphill, starting with a long climb up a grassy slope before you head into the bush. The path is mostly easy to follow but keep an eye on the orange markers as you get higher into the bush. The trail traverses several ridge lines before reaching the summit. Don't expect much running; mostly this is technical trail that demands careful footwork. Be careful on the way down too.
For a point-to-point option you can continue down the easier side to complete the Karioi Traverse, or for an easier summit up-and-back take the Wairake Track.
This trail includes the peak Mount Karioi.

None. It's a big climb, make sure you take enough.
Lots of mud and slippery/dangerous sections in winter/wet weather.
The high level tracks follow steep-sided ridges, take extra care.
Do you have a suggestion on where to go afterwards for the best coffee / cake / breakfast / brunch / beer?
