Description

Part of this route is in the Kaiteriteri MTB park. A lot (but NOT all) these trails are open to runners - please keep left on trails and note that NO headphones permitted to be used on the trails.

Start at the beach and run South across the bridge the turn onto Martins Farm Road and run to the entry of the Moutain Bike park. In peak summer the park can be full of mountain bikers so to avoid any traffic problems it may be easier to carry along Martins farm road and into the park just by the entrance to Kimi Ora resort from there you can access the uphill sections on MTB tracks Ziggy and Corkscrew - here traffic is slower and 70 % going up hill with you. Stay Left!!

If you follow the route through from the start carry on following the Great Taste Trail through the Pump Track then up some switchbacks to the junction with Easy Rider trail. Go straight west then onto Cruise Control trail and follow this for 2 kms to a junction at which you follow Glade Runner and Revelation trails for 1.5 kms.

Turn left onto Ziggy which zig zags up hill to another junction, where you turn right onto Corkscrew. This is a great section to run as it zigzags at a nice angle up through mixed pine and native bush for 5km. Keep your ears open for bikes thundering down this trail. At the junction with Jaws carry on straight up the hill for 200 metres to the skid site where there is a picnic table, shade sail and awesome views over Kaiteriteri and Tasman Bay.

From here continue up the gravel forestry road at the south end of the skid site you are now out of the MTB park and in the Kaiteriteri Forest. The road climbs up to a flat area with a large fire pond. Turn right and follow the gravel road which finally tops out and starts a gentle descent. Keep following the main gravel road North as it eventually zig zags down hill for 2 kms to an old skid site, where it starts a short climb again to an old water tank. Here there is an overgrown junction - the track you need to follow turns right (NE). The entrance is a bit overgrown but but there is an old sign. The road is rough and un-metalled but clear to follow. As it descends it gets better till it becomes a metalled road again. Stay on the main trail, don't be tempted by side trails as they go nowhere.

Eventually you meet the Kaiteri Sandy Bay road - turn right and run along the edge of this narrow winding sealed road back to Kaiteriteri.

Wild Explorers

I did it!
  • Access

Park on the beach or big carpark in Kaiteriteri.

Lots of parking, although in January the place can get packed and you may have to park over in Little Kaiteriteri. Plenty of buses run between Motueka and Kaiteri in summer; less in winter.

  • Staying Safe

    Moderate.

Take a copy of map and your phone. DON'T go up any tracks in MTB park that have No Entry signs posted - they are gun barrels!!

    Generally good.

Short-sleeved thermal top, Windproof jacket, Personal Locator Beacon (PLB), Whistle, Cellphone, Map.

Take water with you - there's only 1 decent creek on Corkscrew Track. The rest is dry or water is mank!

January MTB park is wall to wall bikes. After heavy rain the track is muddy slippery in places.

Mountain bikes. STAY LEFT and leave your earphones behind - you need your senses on watch in the park for traffic from ahead and behind.

  • Post run indulgence
