The Opunake Loop trail is a well signposted trail which takes you right around the town of Opunake.
Starting at the Opunake Lake head off to the right of the public toilets following the trail with the Lake to your left. Markers guide you around the lake and at the other side of the lake you will have a fork in the track. Head to the right to continue up beside the Waiaua River and under the bridge for State Highway 45 at the Southern end of the town.
Trail markers guide you the rest of the way, exploring the outskirts of Opunake residential area, before making your way to the Northern end, and crossing back under Start Highway 45 again.
Continuing following the markers to follow the coastline back to the start. As a note to keep it dog-friendly, you will miss dropping down onto Opunake Beach, but the views from above are just as nice.
Once back to the lake, add another loop of the lake, making sure to turn left at the fork in the track to complete a lake loop for this trail.
Great mix of Lake, river and coastal sea views while exploring around this small town.
Public toilets at the point of the trail, plus multiple located around town. Check the photos for a town map showing additional toilets.
Plenty of grass verge parking just of the road. This trail can be accessed from a multitude of places around the town.

Great little loop in Opunake. Mostly gravel or grass, with a little road thrown in. Not at all technical and only a few short pinch climbs. Lots of variety and things to look at including some cliff top views out to the ocean. I'll make this a regular when I'm in Taranaki.
