From the Long Hilly Walking Track (loop track) carpark, follow the formed DOC track to the right (descends), follow the track approx 1km to the junction for Long Hilly Walking track and Te Araroa trail (hard right turn).
The track starts to deteriorate but is well marked with orange triangles for the full length of the trail - it's awesome technical single track, but also very muddy and wet. With lots of exposed roots, good foot placement is important. The trail is in mainly in the bush with small clearings at Turnbull's hut and Martin's Hut.
Turnbull's Hut is in poor condition (holes in roof/walls, dirty floor), and Martin's Hut has been renovated for the TA, wooden floor and good roofing.
The trail follows old water races cut into the hillside in the 1880s for gold mining.
At the carpark, follow DOC signage.

Very muddy generally but especially after rain. The trail is mainly in bush so sheltered from the wind.
