A fantastic link-up of local favorites featuring epic ridgeline travel and a fresh perspective on the classic skyline. While Roys and Alpha get the fame, the journey over Middle Peak is the hidden gem that ties it all together.
The Approach: Start at the Motatapu Trailhead and head to Fernburn Hut. Important: Fill up here—this is the last water source for the rest of the day.
The Climb: From the hut, take the obvious spur directly behind it. It follows a reasonably worn ground trail but is steep in places—this is why the route flows best in this direction (climbing the steep tech, running the smooth ridge).
The Ridge: Once you gain the height, follow the open ridge over Middle Peak. It’s gorgeous country with epic valley views on both sides.
The Finish: eventually, you join the popular Wānaka Skyline. The run between Mt. Alpha and Roys Peak is a classic, offering faster kilometers on a well-formed trail before the final descent down the Roys Peak 4WD track.
Take plenty of water, especially on hot Otago days. The ridge is exposed and dry.
This trail includes the peaks Mount Alpha , Roys Peak and Middle Peak.
Long drop toilet on either end of the trail.
There's parking on either end of the trail. Roys Peak carpark can get very busy in summer.
