Starting the loop clockwise, head West on the Rangatau Forest Road over 2 bridges & warm up an the gradual incline; you may have to tread gingerly at about the 1k mark, to get past a boggy bit of the road in winter.
At around 1.6kms, the road bears right; just continue heading up until you've covered 3.9kms.
Turn right and continue 1k along 4wd track past a campsite, then into single track & cross the small stream ( if you're careful, you can keep your feet dry) & enjoy another 3.9 kms of lovely easy undulating, downhill single-track trail, back to the start.

Google maps doesn't seem to work here! 12km from Ohakune en route to Waiouru, turn off SH 49 onto Karioi Station Road.and drive 2kms; (You might have spied the DOC sign for the Rotokura Ecological Reserve, 1km ahead, but that's an adventure for another time!) Cross the RR tracks, and turn left onto Rangatau Road, then right on to Rangatau Forest Road, continuing approximately 3.5 kms, past the middle track entrance, to the North Trail head/base . There is room to pull off the forestry road , where the base of the North Track meets the road.

Great little adventure ! I've never escaped this trail with dry shoes, but that adds to the fun. The foresty road section begins to drag, but just appreciate Mt Ruapehu looming over you. The single trail makes up for it, lovely running. But there will be MUD! Run this clockwise.
