A lovely little loop heading out from Waikuku Beach Surf Club carpark and onto the sand.

Head north along the beach all the way to the lower edge of the Ashly River/Rakahuri Estuary. Circle round and head back south along the estuary, home to rare and endangered birdlife, regenerating rushes and sedges.

Follow the path back to Waikuku/Ashly River carpark, and then the little track to the right of North Terrace road and cross onto the big grassy North oval (Between North Terrace and Rotten Row). Run through this and out onto Domain Terrace past the Waikuku Fish and Chip Shop, turn left, follow the foot path left over a small bridge back to Waikuku Beach Surf Lifesaving club carpark!

The loop can be restricted at high tide and you may have to do a shorter one over the dunes as the estuary is quite swampy when flooded.

Rare and endangered birdlife living in a beautiful regenerating estuary and coastal dune setting, on quiet days the beach is like a mirror, go at low tide and the sea touches the sky.

At Waikuku beach Surf Club (at the start and at 3-4km at the Waikuku Beach/Ashley River Estuary.

Parking available in the Surfclub (or outside the gates if walking the beach after 7pm), as gates are locked (seasonal - check signs as they close earlier in the winter).

Easy.

Generally good.

Waikuku Beach Fish and Chip shop.

High tide and rough winter storms leave you a big exposed.

If you are running barefoot on the beach, keep an eye out for broken shells they can be sharp!
