Park along the gravel road next to the fence. The first few kilometers are gravel, then continue on the 4WD track to the summit of Mount Studholme. There’s a communications tower and a few small buildings at the top, providing shade or cover if it's windy or sunny.

If you decide to continue to Mount Cecil, the 4WD track gets rougher, very rocky, and broken. You can also ride a bike up Mount Studholme, but I wouldn’t go further. Continue a few more kilometers until you reach the fence and a locked gate. Follow along the fence. It’s not a very scenic part, as you’ll be walking over tussocks, and there are many old wires from a former fence. The summit of Mount Cecil is partly behind the fence. It’s definitely one of the oddest mountain summits I've seen in New Zealand. Enjoy the view of the surrounding mountains and the ocean in the distance, then head back the same way to the parking lot.
